The Local Language Help Center was launched today at the University of Colombo. The launch was organized by Theekshana, through which the Center will operate.
The objective of this venture is to address issues which users may still encounter when using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Sinhala and Tamil.
It is now possible to use ICT in Sinhala and Tamil, due to initiatives taken by CINTEC, ICTA, UCSC, the University of Moratuwa, SLSI and the private sector and many individuals. Now the standards are in place and it is possible to type, browse the Internet and search in Sinhala and Tamil, exchange emails, create databases and use social media.
But users may still encounter issues when using ICT in Sinhala and Tamil, and with this Help Center, support will be provided by analyzing and resolving issues which organizations and individuals in Sri Lanka may encounter when using computers and mobile devices in Sinhala and Tamil.
Prof. Lakshman Dissanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, who graced the event, commended the initiative and stated that it is opportune. While appreciating the great work carried out by Theekshana previously, as a spinoff Company of the University Of Colombo School Of Computing (UCSC) in his speech, he further stated that he would support this initiative fully. The other speakers were Mr. D.C. Dissanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Digital Infrastructure and IT, Mr. Wasantha Deshapriya, former Secretary, MTDI, Prof. Gihan Dias, CEO of the LK Domain Registry, Dr. Ruvan Weerasinghe Chairman of Theekshana and Mr. Harsha Wijayawardhana, COO of Theekshana, all of whom had been involved in the development of ICT in Local Languages.
The event was attended by ICT professionals, language experts and by people who had been working in the area of ICT and local language development. The initiative is being sponsored by the LK Domain Registry.
